What is MSPO Trace?

MSPO Trace is an independent public directory providing access to MSPO certificate records. It enables buyers, researchers, government bodies, NGOs, and the general public to look up whether a palm oil producer, mill, or supply chain operator appears in the MSPO certification database.

The platform serves as a transparency and reference resource for stakeholders across the palm oil supply chain.

MSPO Trace is not an agency or regulatory body. It does not issue, approve, or revoke certificates.
What is MSPO?

MSPO stands for Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil. It is a national certification standard established by the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB) to verify that palm oil is produced in accordance with responsible environmental, social, and economic practices.

MSPO certification is mandatory for all palm oil producers in Malaysia and represents one of the largest national sustainability certification programmes globally.

Is MSPO Trace affiliated with the Malaysian government or MPOB?

No. MSPO Trace is an independent public directory and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or operated by the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB), the Ministry of Plantation Industries and Commodities, or any other government body.

Certificate data published on this platform is sourced from publicly available certification records. For regulatory or statutory enquiries, stakeholders should engage directly with MPOB at mpob.gov.my.

How current is the certificate data on MSPO Trace?

The registry is updated periodically based on data sourced from MPOB and accredited certification bodies. Certificate statuses reflect the information available at the time of the most recent data refresh.

For time-sensitive verification — particularly for procurement, trade, or compliance purposes — stakeholders are advised to confirm certificate status directly with the relevant certification body (CB) listed against the record.

How do I search for a certificate?

Use the search bar on any registry page to query by:

  • Track ID — the unique certificate number (e.g. OPMC31223 or SCCS04021)
  • Entity or estate name — the name of the plantation, mill, or facility
  • Company name — the parent company or corporate group

Results may be further refined using the filter dropdowns for State, Certification Status, and Category.

Which registry should I search?

The appropriate registry depends on the entity type being verified:

  • OPMC Registry — for estates, plantations, palm oil mills, and smallholder groups certified under Oil Palm Management Certification
  • SCCS Registry — for refineries, kernel crushers, oleochemical plants, and biodiesel facilities certified under the Supply Chain Certification Standard
  • Smallholders Registry — for organised smallholder groups specifically

If the entity type is uncertain, the OPMC Registry is the recommended starting point as it contains the largest volume of records.

What is a Track ID?

A Track ID is the unique reference number assigned to each MSPO certificate record. The prefix identifies the certification type:

  • OPMC + number — e.g. OPMC31223 — Oil Palm Management Certification
  • SCCS + number — e.g. SCCS04021 — Supply Chain Certification Standard

Searching by Track ID will return the exact corresponding record.

The entity I am searching for does not appear in the registry. What are the possible reasons?

There are several possible explanations:

  • The search term may be too specific — try a shorter keyword or partial name
  • The entity may be listed under a different trading or legal name
  • The record may exist in a different registry (OPMC, SCCS, or Smallholders)
  • An active filter may be excluding the record — clear all filters and search again
  • The entity’s certification data may not yet be reflected in the current dataset

If the entity holds a valid certificate that is not appearing, verification should be sought directly from the relevant certification body.

What does each certificate status indicate?

Certificate records carry one of five statuses:

  • ACTIVE — The certificate is valid and current. The entity is certified under the applicable MSPO standard.
  • DELAYED — The scheduled audit or recertification has not been completed within the required timeframe. The certificate is pending renewal.
  • EXTENDED — The certificate validity period has been formally extended beyond its original expiry date by the certification body.
  • REINSTATE — The certificate was previously suspended or allowed to lapse and has since been reinstated following satisfactory audit.
  • TRANSFERRED — The certificate has been transferred to a different certification body or entity.
Is a certificate with DELAYED status still considered valid for trade purposes?

Whether a DELAYED certificate is acceptable for procurement, supply chain, or regulatory purposes depends on the requirements of the buyer, the terms set by the certification body, and applicable trade agreements.

MSPO Trace does not make determinations on certificate acceptability. Buyers and supply chain operators should verify the current standing of any DELAYED certificate directly with the issuing certification body prior to transacting.

What does the Current Audit Stage field indicate?

This field indicates the entity’s current position within the MSPO certification audit cycle:

  • Initial Audit — First-time certification assessment
  • Surveillance 1 – 4 — Annual monitoring audits conducted during the 5-year certification period
  • Recertification 1 / 2 — Full reassessment conducted at the end of each 5-year certification cycle
  • RC1 Surveillance 1 – 4 — Annual surveillance audits conducted during the first recertification cycle
What is OPMC certification?

OPMC — Oil Palm Management Certification — covers the upstream segment of the palm oil supply chain, encompassing the cultivation and harvesting of fresh fruit bunches (FFB).

Entities certified under OPMC include:

  • Estates and plantations
  • Palm oil mills
  • Organised smallholder groups
  • Smallholder Programme Operators and Coordinators (SPOCs)
What is SCCS certification?

SCCS — Supply Chain Certification Standard — applies to the downstream segment of the supply chain. It certifies that facilities processing or handling certified palm oil maintain the integrity of the sustainability claim throughout the chain of custody.

Entities certified under SCCS include:

  • Palm oil refineries
  • Palm kernel crushers
  • Oleochemical manufacturers
  • Biodiesel producers
  • Other palm-based processing facilities
What is the Smallholders Registry?

The Smallholders Registry lists organised smallholder groups — independent farmers cultivating oil palm on smallholdings who are certified collectively under the MSPO scheme through a group certification framework.

Smallholders are certified under the OPMC standard but are presented as a dedicated registry to facilitate targeted reference by supply chain auditors, NGOs, and researchers.

What is a Certification Body (CB)?

A Certification Body (CB) is an independent, accredited third-party organisation authorised to conduct MSPO audits and issue certificates on behalf of the scheme. CBs are accredited by the Department of Standards Malaysia (DSM) and are required to operate independently of the entities they audit.

There are currently 23 accredited CBs operating under the MSPO scheme. The assigned CB is displayed against each certificate record in the registry.

What is the process for obtaining MSPO certification?

The certification process generally follows these stages:

  • 1. Engage an accredited CB — Select a certification body from the list of MSPO-accredited organisations
  • 2. Pre-assessment / gap analysis — The CB evaluates current practices against the applicable MSPO standard
  • 3. Corrective action — Identified non-conformances are addressed prior to the formal audit
  • 4. Stage 1 and Stage 2 audit — A formal assessment is conducted against the standard
  • 5. Certificate issuance — Upon satisfactory completion, a 5-year certificate is issued
  • 6. Annual surveillance audits — Ongoing annual audits are required to maintain certification

For detailed procedural guidance, refer directly to MPOB at mpob.gov.my or contact an accredited CB.

Is MSPO certification mandatory?

Yes. MSPO certification is mandatory for all oil palm growers, estates, and mills operating in Malaysia, pursuant to national policy on sustainable palm oil production. This obligation applies to both large-scale commercial plantations and independent smallholders, with the latter eligible to certify collectively through a group scheme arrangement.

How do I request a correction to a certificate record on MSPO Trace?

As an independent directory, MSPO Trace does not administer or modify certificate data directly. Certificate records are sourced from MPOB and accredited certification bodies.

To request a correction:

  • Contact your accredited Certification Body (CB) — CBs are responsible for the accuracy of submitted certificate data
  • Alternatively, raise the matter with MPOB through their official channels at mpob.gov.my

Corrections submitted to the CB or MPOB will be reflected in the MSPO Trace registry at the next scheduled data update.
